Meet Muzette - from walking to trotting

June 16, 2026

Hi!

We are a family of 6 and have 4 beautiful children. Three daughters and one son. Our third child, Muzette, was born with a genetic condition called Malan Syndrome, a very rare condition. This condition affects Muzette in several ways but one of the ways is with her muscle tone. She began walking on her own at the age of 4. We found out about Prairie Strides through a physio whom has worked with Muzette. Muzette has now been riding with Prairie Strides for two years and loves it so much.

Every week she will sign “horse” with her fingers and sign “mémère “ (grandma) to let me know she is ready to go see her horse Flynn. She makes sure to share this information with her friends and family weekly. She will sign what she wants for supper and to not forget her hat. She eats in the car so that’s fun too. I believe Muzette needs to remind me to bring her cowboy boots – I tend to forget that part of her riding experience!

Muzette loves riding with Prairie Strides that she will even play horse with her siblings at home. She’s so proud of the fact that Flynn will trot with her now. It makes her happy!

This program has helped Muzette’s muscle tone and spinal cord. It has given her a love for animals and a deep connection with them. She gets so happy she will laugh while hugging animals now. Horses seem not only to strengthen her but has decreased some anxiety to transitions as well.

Putting her in this program was the best decision. The volunteers are so welcoming and bring a sense of safety. She’s part of something that brings her strength, joy and belonging. We can’t wait to continue this program with Prairie Strides for another two years. Some challenges with family who have members with needs can be financial and lack of one-on-one time with other members. We are grateful the program is affordable for us and that Prairie Strides sees us and are sensitive to families like us.

Thank you,

Manon (Muzette’s Mom)
