Perry finds his stride

Perry is a 9 year old kid, who loves animals, video games and checking out the night sky. He likes to play games with his friends and go to school. Sometimes, he gets overwhelmed by loud noises, new situations and new environments. He tries hard to be brave, but it is intimidating for him to try new things.

We found Prairie Strides after searching online for activities for children with disabilities. We had tried many things like gymnastics, soccer and swimming, but Perry struggled to participate. He would often not want to go or become dysregulated during these activities that were usually crowded and/or loud.  

When we got the message that Perry would have an assessment for Prairie Strides, we were hopeful that this might be something that would interest Perry. He was always excited to see the horses at the Assiniboine Park Zoo and loved his family cat and dog. When we first arrived for Perry’s assessment everyone was so welcoming and Perry loved to meet the horses and barn cats, but he sure wasn’t going to get up on one. We were naturally a bit disappointed, but glad Perry had an evening out to meet some new friends. 

So, we were thrilled when we learned that Prairie Strides had a spot for Perry in their new grooming program. Perry loved to come see the horses and barn cats every week. He had the opportunity to watch some of the kids in the riding program. Soon he began to express interest in riding. When a spot opened up in the riding program, Perry was ready to get up on a horse. He hasn’t looked back.

Perry is excited to go to “see the horses” every week and has really connected with the volunteers in the program. We have seen Perry’s confidence grow since starting Prairie Strides. It is still one of the few activities that he will consistently participate in.  

I would say to any family considering registering in Prairie Strides to give it a try. The staff and volunteers are excellent, and Perry has gained so much confidence from riding the horses.

I am so grateful for the Prairie Strides program. Seeing Perry on a horse, happy and engaged, gives me so much joy. I am so proud of him. There are few programs available for kids with disabilities, I want to say thank you to all the staff and volunteers for making this program possible.
